The Holistic Approach, and is it for you?
Whether you are looking Holistic Counseling, Holistic Theracoaching, or Psychospiritual Healing practices, the holistic perspective offers an integrative approach grounded in the premise that the whole person is made up of interdependent mental, physical, spiritual, and emotional parts. Thus, if one part isn’t working properly, all the other parts are affected.
In my work, spirituality and the body play essential roles in addressing your healing process.
According to Dr. Maya Spencer from the Royal College of Psychiatrists, spirituality involves the recognition of a feeling or a sense of belief that there is something greater than oneself, something more to being human than sensory experience, and that the greater whole of which we are part is cosmic or divine in nature.
Though spirituality is a part of religion, spirituality is different from religion. There is really no one definition for spirituality, as it may differ from one person to another. Moreover, my clients choose how their spiritual beliefs are integrated into their individual healing process, as I am aware that spirituality may help them find meaning and purpose in their lives, bring hope and healing in times of suffering and loss, and encourage them to seek a better relationship with themselves and others.
For instance, I possess the clinical skills and tools to assess, diagnose, and treat psychiatric syndromes and populations; however, I go beyond the traditional wisdom of appraisal in the clinical environment, as I am very aware of the damage mental health stigma can have on an individual. The goal is to help you make sense of the mental health diagnosis you might have been given and also make sense of your experiences and symptoms, some which may be troubling or confusing. Learning about mental health can help you see that you are not your diagnosis, and that you are not alone.
On a similar note that stems from a holistic approach, I may first consider discussing with my clients, what steps they have taken or could take before recommending a medication evaluation; unless, of course, the situation appears to require an assessment by a psychiatrist as soon as possible. If it’s appropriate, I may introduce the use of breath, relaxation and mindfulness exercises, creative expression, or reframing negative self-talk as viable alternatives of conservative treatment.
When it comes to spirituality, it is different from religion, though it’s often confused with the same. There is no one definition for spirituality as it may differ from one person to another. Moreover, my clients choose how their spiritual beliefs support their individual healing process, as I am aware that spirituality may help them find meaning and purpose in their lives, bring hope and healing in times of suffering and loss, and encourage them to seek a better relationship with themselves and others. Moreover, as the foundation of my client's healing process, their spiritual beliefs and practices are integrated into their holistic theracoaching sessions.
I strongly adhere to the belief that there is basic goodness in everyone, that we are all doing the best we can, and that no one is broken, even though it may feel like it at times. I often encourage my clients to consider that, when they are willing to do the healing work it takes to get better, then their wounds can ultimately be experienced as precious scars as in Kintsugi or kintsukuroi: the Japanese art of filling in the cracks of broken pottery with gold.
